A description of the English settlements on the River Gambia. III. Appendix: containing zoological and botanical descriptions, and translations from the Arabic.

    First edition of this early work on Madeira, Gambia and the Cape Verde Islands. It covers the anthropology, geology and natural history of the island groups. The plates show fine landscape scenes and a total of 57 zoological species, including (new species of) shells, spiders, insects, and fish. One plate is devoted to linguistic details. Atable lists native, naturalised and cultivated plants on Madeira. Bowdich (1790-1824) died during the mission described in this book: his widow published his findings posthumously. Very good copy, binding with very little shelfwear. Contents with light scattered foxing. The coloured plates fresh and vivid. Abbey Travel, 194. Nissen ZBI, 520.

    Contains the Paläontologische Verhältnisse. Systematisches Verzeichniss der fossilen Reste von Madeira, Porto Santo und Santa Maria nebst beschreibung der neuen Arten, by Karl Mayer. 7 of the 8 plates show late Tertiary marine molluscs described, named and figured by Mayer, descriptions of localities with their faunules, a table of all species, etc. The folding engraved maps show views on the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo. Some are spotted, the plates with shells are clean.

    A rare monograph on the molluscs of Madeira. In Cat. BM(NH) listed under ”Paiva, A. da”. This is the offprint, with the same pagination, however, with one additional page with quotations from Psalm 103, Isaac Newton, and Castello de Paiva. Uncut, text unopened. The wrappers much frayed but all the printing intact. One plate foxed, the other clean. The plates were drawn by Arnoul. Rare. Caprotti, pp. 208-209; Cat. BM(NH) p. 1499.

    Some scattered light foxing, but generally clean. Some new taxa are described and figured (by Da Costa and Gomes). Nissen ZBI 3117.
